Listed Buildings

Listed Buildings are so called because they are included in an official national list compiled by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The list is known as the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.

Taunton Deane has a rich inheritance of Listed Buildings - approximately 2,000 in number. The buildings are grouped according to their importance, Grade I, Grade II* and Grade II. In Taunton itself, the Tudor Tavern (Fore Street) is a prominent example of a Grade I building. The Crescent and Hammet Street, Taunton, are fine illustrations of Grade II* buildings.

To safeguard their character, Listed Buildings cannot be altered INSIDE or OUTSIDE - extended or demolished, unless Listed Building Consent has first been obtained through the Council. This also applies to any object or structure fixed to the Listed Building or which forms part of its historic curtilage.

Information about planning permission can be found on the Planning pages.
