Animal licensing

The Licensing team at Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) is responsible for regulating animal licensing under the Animal Boarding Establishment Act 1963.

Licensing regulates animal boarders, dog breeders, pet shops, riding establishments, dangerous wild animal keepers and zoos to ensure that animals are kept in suitable living conditions and are properly looked after.

Please Note:

With effect from 1st October 2018, The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 update a number of licensing provisions.  Anyone with an existing animal related business or planning a business should read the regulations and the guidance notes which accompany them.

Our pages for Pet Shops, Animal Boarding, Home Boarding, Dog Breeding and Riding Establishments detail the arrangements currently in force for these businesses. Guidance notes in relation to each of the licensable activities have been added, however we will update these pages further after 1st October. Pages will also be created for new licensable activities, such as Day Care for Dogs.

Licensing arrangements for Dangerous Wild Animals and for Zoos are not altered by the new regulations.

The following guidance have been published:
