Housing Benefit helps people on low incomes pay their rent.
The Council is responsible for administering the Housing Benefit scheme on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for tenants in the Taunton Deane area.
If you are of working age and need to make a brand new claim for help towards your rent or any of these five main benefits:
... you will need to claim Universal Credit from the DWP online.
If this doesn't apply to you, or you are a pensioner, and you are on a low income and you pay rent to the Council, a Housing Association or a private landlord, you can claim Housing Benefit online.
The Council administers its own means-tested support scheme to help people on low incomes pay their Council Tax.
If you are claiming Housing Benefit at the same time, we will work out your Council Tax Support using the information you provide for your Housing Benefit claim.
If you need to claim Universal Credit and Council Tax Support, please complete our online claim form as well as the DWP's online claim form for Universal Credit.
To complete your claim you must provide us with proof of your identity, income and circumstances.
Once you have made a claim to us and provided all the proof we need we will make a decision on your claim.
If you call into The Deane House with all the proof we need, you can leave our office with a decision letter. Ask us about our 'There and Then' service.
