Health and safety at work

The Council are responsible for enforcing health and safety law in lower risk premises throughout the district.

We no longer carry out regular inspections at these premises but we will still respond to concerns about health and safety.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is responsible for all other premises including construction services, factories and manufacturing, farming and agriculture and public services.  If you have a concern regarding any of these sectors please contact the HSE website directly.

All employers have a legal duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees while at work.  The owner of the business is responsible for finding out what legal requirements have to be met and ensuring that everything is done to meet those requirements.

Employers and employees can find out information about what they must do to make sure their businesses comply with health and safety law at the HSE website.

Information about risk management and completing risk assessments can also be found at the HSE's Risk Management page.

We don’t provide any health and safety training and are unable to provide recommendations for private companies.

The HSE’s enforcement policy is available to look at online.
