Sheltered housing

Sheltered Housing is a housing provision designed to meet the needs of an ever increasing older population who, due to either a vulnerability or disability, will need assistance to maintain their tenancy.

This assistance is provided to Sheltered Housing tenants through Sheltered Housing Officers and Estates Officers.

Currently there are approximately 900 sheltered housing properties across the Borough. The properties are as far west as Wiveliscombe and as far east as Polkesfield.

All properties are one bedroom and are in two types, flats and bungalows. All properties are self-contained with their own front door, bathroom and fitted kitchen. Flats may have a communal entrance as well.

The Sheltered Housing service provides safety and reassurance through a service standard and 24 hour emergency call centre link via the lifeline equipment in the property.

Access to this service is via the Choice Base Lettings System called Somerset Homefinder.

This is achieved by registering onto the external link Homefinder Somerset or by completing an application form. Forms and assistance can be found in either Taunton Deane Borough Council Customer Hub or by contacting the Housing Options team by phone.

In addition to the core rent there are charges for the provision of the support service and helpline provision which are detailed in the rent statements and are attached to the sheltered property as a service standard.
