Hackney carriage vehicle licence

Hackney carriage vehicles are taxis which:

If you drive a hackney carriage, the vehicle must be licensed by us.

You can download an application form, collect an application pack from the main reception desk at the council offices or contact us at licensing@tauntondeane.gov.uk if you would like one to be emailed to you.

Please note: It can take up to 14 days to issue a vehicle licence.

You must return the application with:

Your hackney carriage vehicle must be no more than seven years old when you apply for the grant of a licence.

Your vehicle must also comply with Taunton Deane Borough Councils hackney carriage vehicle conditions, outlined in the Taxi Handbook.

All new hackney carriage vehicles must be wheel chair accessible.

Passenger carrying vehicles that have nine or more seats must be licensed as a Public Service Vehicle.

The cost to apply for the grant of a hackney carriage vehicle licence is £144.
The cost to apply for the renewal of a hackney carriage vehicle licence is £142.

Once we receive and check your application, we will issue you a licence. You will receive a paper licence and licence plate. You must display the plate on the rear of the vehicle so that it is clearly visible.

The licence will last for one year. We will write to you two months before the licence expires to remind you to renew it.

Anyone who drives a hackney carriage vehicle must apply for a taxi driver licence.
