Private hire vehicle licence

Private hire vehicles are vehicles which carry out pre-booked journeys only. This includes contracted work like school runs. They cannot be hailed by members of the public, or picked up from taxi ranks.

If you drive a private hire vehicle, it must be licensed by us.

Please note: It can take up to 14 days to issue a vehicle licence.

You can download an application form, collect an application pack from the main reception desk at the council offices or please contact us at licensing@tauntondeane.gov.uk if you would like us to email you one.

You must return the application with:

Your private hire vehicle must be no more than seven years old when you apply for the grant of a licence.  We will consider an older vehicle if it is “special”, for example a classic car.

Your vehicle must also comply with Taunton Deane Borough Councils private hire vehicle conditions, outlined in the Taxi Handbook.

Passenger carrying vehicles that have nine or more seats must be licensed as a Public Service Vehicle at Gov.uk.

The cost to apply for the grant of a private hire vehicle licence is £144.
The cost to apply for the renewal of a private hire vehicle licence is £142.

Information about how the Council constructs its fees can be found in the document Guidance on fee construction.

Once we receive and check your application, we will issue you a licence. You will receive a paper licence and licence plate. You must display the plate on the rear of the vehicle so that it is clearly visible, unless you have been given an exemption by us.

The licence will last for one year. We will write to you two months before the licence expires to remind you to renew it.

Anyone who drives the vehicle must apply for a taxi driver licence.
