Local Nature Reserves in Taunton Deane

A Local Nature Reserve is an area of high nature conservation value, often seen as a place of special interest in the local area. Many reserves are used by the public for quiet enjoyment and appreciation of nature. The Council has identified 13 sites within the Borough. To date, twelve have already been designated as Local Nature Reserves. Management plans have (or are being) developed for each site and overall strategies for the LNRs will be developed in the following four areas:

  • Community Involvement - Providing support to encourage and enable local people to become involved in the establishment, management, recording, wardening and uses of sites.
  • Access - Maximising accessibility to the sites for a wide range of disabilities as possible.
  • Education- Developing an overall package for the LNRs to enable use by educational establishments and other organisations.
  • Interpretation- Developing this website and providing interpretation facilities at each reserve.

To get the most from your visit to a Local Nature Reserve, follow the Country Code. Please remember to:

  • Respect wildlife - do not pick any flowers or disturb nesting birds. If you see anything interesting, please advise the Heritage and Landscape Team so that we can update our species records.
  • Be properly dressed - wear suitable clothing. Cover up bare skin if visiting areas where bracken is present, e.g. Ash Common, to avoid contact with ticks. Stout boots or wellington boots are strongly advised.
  • Picnics - you are welcome to picnic, but please take home any litter.
  • Dogs - please clear up after your dogs.
  • Horse riding and cycling - these activities are only allowed on designated bridleways and cycle paths.
  • Motorbikes are not permitted on any reserve.

Education Packs

Education Packs have been produced for some of the reserves. If you would like a copy for a specific reserve please contact the Heritage and Landscape Team.
