Frequently Asked Questions
Claiming
How do I claim benefit?
Claims for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit must be made in writing using, in most cases, our Benefit claim form. When you have completed the form, please return it to us.
Remember to send in any original documents we need to support your claim. The claim form includes a checklist telling you the things we need to see.
Send the form back to us as soon as you can as we normally only pay benefit from the Monday following the date we get your form. The earlier you get it back, the more benefit you will get.
A claim form can be downloaded from Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claim form (328 KB).
If you need to make a brand new claim for either
- Income Support
- Job Seekers Allowance or
- Incapacity Benefit
...as well as Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit, telephone Jobcentre Plus on 0845 60 60 704.
An advisor will take your details over the telephone for all these benefits. Jobcentre Plus will pass details about your Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax claim to us. You will not need to complete a claim form.
If you are a private tenant or you have non-dependants living with you, further information can be viewed on our 'Speed up your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claim' leaflet (107 KB).
If you do not have any other proof of your rent payments you can download our 'Rent Payment Certificate' (55 KB).
On request we can now produce these forms in braille, audio tapes or large print text.
