What is Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit?

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are national welfare benefits which help people on low incomes pay their rent and Council Tax.

Both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are mean tested benefits.  This means when we work out your benefit, we have to take into account your income, savings and investments.

Local councils run the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit schemes using government rules.
