The current Mayor
Councillor Tim Slattery
Councillor Tim Slattery is married to Gill and has four grown up children. Tim was born in Tipperary and came to England for Christmas in 1966 and enjoyed himself so much, he decided to stay. He subsequently continued his higher education in London, Bristol, Weston and Taunton.
His specialist area of study was in the construction industry where he gained various technical certificates from Twickenham College and Brunel College in Bristol. He was awarded an Honours Degree from Nottingham Trent University and the Higher National Diploma in Environmental Health from Bath Spa University.
Councillor Slattery has put these skills to use over the intervening years for the benefit of the less advantaged members of society, whilst working for the Probation Service, Government Agencies and charities, such as the Paddington Farm Trust in London, whose objective is to provide working farm holidays in Somerset for young people from socially deprived areas of Paddington.
Tim is currently employed with Sedgemoor District Council in the Private Sector Housing Team, where he specialises in providing grants for Disabled people and those in need of Housing repairs assistance.
Tim has been a Parish Councillor in Stoke St Gregory prior to becoming a District Councillor for the Halcon Ward, a post which he has held for nine years.
Gill is a Primary school teacher and has specialised in Special Needs teaching for most of her career and currently works in two local schools.
In order to reflect their commitment, the chosen theme for their Mayoral year will be "Celebrating Equality and Diversity" in Taunton Deane.
Tim and Gill's hobbies include rugby, swimming, gardening, twinning, walking holidays, yoga, quilting and folk music. Tim's sporting ambition whilst at school in Tipperary was to play Hurling for Ireland.
