History of the Mayor

There have been Mayors representing the people of the Borough for around five hundred years. Townspeople had to ask the King for a charter to allow them to set up a Council to run things. The Royal Charter gave permission for the town to have a leader who became known as the Mayor.
The present charter was granted on 10 March 1975. The Old Municipal Buildings in Corporation Street Taunton were used from 1887 -1987. Taunton Town had previously had three charters on three occasions although they had each been lost for various reasons.
The photograph shows Myer Jacobs, Mayor of Taunton 1877 - 79.
The Mayors engagements for the week can be found in the Weekly Bulletin.
