Standards Committee

The Local Government Act 2000 introduced a new ethical framework which applies to county councils, district councils and town and parish councils. It has been introduced by the Government to ensure high standards of conduct in local government.

All authorities are required to adopt a Members Code of Conduct based on a national model to which councillors must sign up.

The Council's Monitoring Officer has the job of holding the Register of Members' Interests, which is available for public inspection at the Borough Council's main offices at The Deane House, Belvedere Road, Taunton. The Standards Committee has the job of overseeing training and promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct by councillors.

The Committee's role is:

  • To consider and recommend a PDF Members' Code of Conduct (364 KB)
  • Monitoring the Code
  • Providing guidance, advice and training
  • Promoting and maintaining a high standard of conduct by members and co-opted members
  • To exercise responsibility for the Parish Councils in the area
  • Granting dispensations
  • Conducting some local investigations
