Taunton's main shopping area is extensive with most major national chains represented. Big name outlets include Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Boots, W H Smith, Waterstones and Virgin Records.

Traffic free pedestrianised zones include the Old Market Shopping Centre, High Street, Riverside, Courtyard and Bath Place. The latter three are noted for their speciality shops.

Within a few minutes drive of Taunton town centre is the quieter more leisurely and attractive shopping centre of Wellington, noted for its independent speciality outlets.

Wiveliscombe is a rural centre and the focus of economic and social activity over a wide area of countryside.
