Dog Barking
Complaints about dog barking or whining are dealt initially by the Dog Warden. This type of disturbance often occurs when owners are out of the house and the dogs are alone and bored. Owners are often not aware that their pets are causing annoyance to their neighbours sometimes late at night and perhaps for hours at a time.
Following the initial complaint the case will be passed to a Noise Control Officer for further investigation, who may monitor and record the noise levels and the frequency of occurrence. If it is determined that a statutory nuisance is being caused a Noise Abatement Notice will be served.
If steps are not taken to comply with the Notice and prevent the problem, owners may be prosecuted, where they face a fine of up to £5,000 on conviction. In extreme cases, dogs can be taken away from their owners, through a Court Order. Though rare, this action has been taken by the Council in the past.
If you have received a complaint about your dog barking or you think your dog may bark when you are out, the Dog Wardens can provide helpful tips on trying the resolve the problems. They also have Citronella Anti-barking collars available for loan.
If you would like more information contact the Dog Warden or you may find the leaflet useful.

Education
Education, information and publicity for the service is important. The Dog Warden organises and attends events to take the message of Responsible Dog Ownership to the public, where there is an opportunity to discuss the problem, answer questions and give out information.
They are also happy to attend other organised events or group meetings such as clubs, schools or voluntary groups which are interested in learning more about the Dog Warden Service and Responsible Dog Ownership.
