Fouling
Complaints of dog fouling and heavily fouled areas will be investigated by the Dog Warden. They carry out routine patrols aimed at identifying the worst affected areas and catching the owners responsible.
Patrols can be carried out outside normal working hours such as early mornings, late evenings and weekends and are usually in a marked van with a uniformed Warden. This can act as a visual deterrent and reminder to dog owners to pick up.
Patrols can only be carried out where the Dog Fouling of Land Act 1996 applies, which is generally land which the public have access to, with some limited exceptions.
No dog fouling signs are available on request from the Dog Warden, however these can only be displayed where the Dog Fouling of Land Act is enforced.
Owners who allow their dogs to foul without picking up immediately, if caught face an immediate fixed penalty fine of £50, or prosecution, which can result in a fine of up to £1,000.
If you have evidence of someone who doesn't pick up after their dog or wish to complain about an area which is heavily fouled contact the Dog Warden Service or complete the Report It form.
Dog waste can be disposed of either in one of the dog bins provided by the Council or taken home and put into your domestic waste bin.

Dog bins
The Council has over 180 dog bins installed across the Deane which are emptied twice weekly and maintained by the Dog Warden Service.
Each year the dog bin provisions are reviewed and the Dog Wardens ask for funds to provide and maintain extra bins. Each bin costs over £240 to buy and install and the annual emptying cost of the existing stock is nearly £30,000.
If you would like to know where your nearest dog bin is then contact the Dog Warden as they have a map of all the dog bins within the Deane.
If you notice a full or vandalised dog bin please contact the Dog Warden or complete the Report It form and the Dog Warden can investigate the problem.
New dog bins can be requested by contacting the Dog Warden in writing or using the Report It link below. All requests for extra dog bins are assessed by the Dog Warden using a scoring system and not all requests will be successful.

The dog bin scoring system
The Dog Warden visits each location where a request for a new bin has been made and marks out of ten are given to each of the following criteria:
- History and evidence of fouling
- Location type (ranging from areas not regularly used by pedestrians to the highest priorities, parks and popular walks)
- Closeness to existing bin
- Closeness to schools, colleges or youth organisations
- Closeness to children's play areas
- Closeness to residential housing
- Ease of vehicular/pedestrian access for emptying the bin.
This system is simple and therefore is as fair as we are able to make it. All requests for new dog bins will be reviewed for two years if unsuccessful in the first to allow the Dog Warden to monitor the area and any changes in the level of dog fouling.
Not all requests for new dog bins will be successful as we have a high demand for new bins and only limited resources available.
