Public Water Supplies
Most water supplies are mains water and are supplied by a water company. In the Taunton Deane area this is either Wessex Water or South-West Water.
The water companies are responsible for monitoring the quality of their supplies and submit annual reports to the Drinking Water Inspectorate and Local Authority in their areas.
If you have a complaint about your water quality you should initially contact the water company, as they may already be aware of the problem. However if you are dissatisfied with their response you can contact the Environmental Protection Team who will investigate and liaise with the water company on your behalf.
Environmental Health and the Drinking Water Inspectorate also have a duty as a regulator for the water companies, during incidents where the water quality may be contaminated. This would usually involve liaison with the District Health Authority to determine the effect of any contamination and to agree to issue a boil notice, if necessary.
