The Law
The Council has a duty under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 to ensure that the district is kept free of rats and mice. The Council can serve notice upon the owners or occupiers of infested land requiring that they get rid of any infestation.
The Public Health Act 1936 also requires the Council to take formal action against occupiers of premises that are infested with vermin.
Treatments
The Council offers a service for the treatment of rats, mice, fleas, bedbugs, cockroaches, cluster flies and wasps within the Taunton Deane area. All treatments are carried out by fully trained Pest Control Officers who will survey the infested area and only treat as appropriate.
To arrange a pest control treatment contact the Pest Control Service. Information on charges can be found on the Fees and Charges page.
Insect Identification
Officers are able to identify the majority of pests common to households and will be happy to give you details of any strange insects which you may find, free of charge. In the rare event of non-identification, we will send the specimen to a special laboratory for identification on your behalf.
Contracts
The Pest Control Service offers both commercial and domestic contracts for Pest Control Treatments.
Domestic contracts are available for rats and mice and are designed to give the householder peace of mind if they have a regular problem with mice or rat activity.
Commercial contracts are available for rats, mice, bedbugs, fleas and cockroaches. Prices are based upon the number of visits likely to be required plus material costs.
We believe both our domestic and commercial services are competitive and attractive when compared to private sector companies. For further information on Pest Control Contracts contact the Pest Control Service.

Seagulls
Seagulls have become a new but increasing problem within Taunton Deane over recent years. As such we introduced a seagull egg replacement programme which is hoped that this will reduce the number of chick hatching and as such reduce the aggressive behaviour.
For further information on the programme or advice about seagulls contact the Pest Control Service.
