The Financial Services Unit provides a comprehensive service covering all aspects of Local Government Finance that is relevant to a Shire District Council. We deliver financial operational support to the various Units of the Authority and to the services provided by the Council. We work in partnership with those front line services to provide a cohesive financial service for the public and elected Members.

The unit carries out the following functions:

• Day to Day financial advice to Managers, Directors and Members,
• Comprehensive budget monitoring,
• Preparation of the Annual Budget and forecasting for the Medium Term Financial Plan,
• The closedown of the annual accounts and the preparation of the statutory Annual Statement of Accounts,
• The administration of the Council's insurance requirements,
• Strategic Treasury Management functions, i.e. borrowing, lending etc,
• The administration of the Council's Creditor Payments function.

In recognition that Finance is often at the heart of all the things the Council wants to do, the Unit endeavours to be represented on all Corporate Working Groups, for example:

• Asset Management Plan Group,
• Healthy workplace strategy,
• Housing Stock Options,
• Vision for Taunton,
• Attends each Directorate SUMs meeting,
• Other specific corporate project groups, i.e. Leisure Trust, Wellsprings Officer group.

In addition members of the Financial Services Unit represent the Council at other professional networks, for example:

• West of England Insurance Group,
• CIPFA Asset Management Planning Network,
• Somerset Finance Managers Group.
