The Borough of Taunton Deane has a rich architectural heritage with many fine towns, villages, country houses, agricultural, industrial and other buildings. At present there are approximately 2000 listed buildings and 41 Conservation Areas. Further information is available on both these types of designation.
The Conservation Staff
Conservation Officers at Taunton Deane Borough Council fulfil the following roles:
- Provide expert guidance to the owners of listed buildings on techniques of approprite maintenance, repair and sympathetic alteration.
- Provide advice to memberes of the public on issues affecting the historic built environment.
- Provide a consultation service to Development Control staff, assessing the appropriateness of development proposals affecting listed buildings and conservation areas.
- Provide guidance on the design of new buildings and structures located with or in proximity to Conservation Areas and listed buildings.
- Monitor the condition of listed buildings and conservation areas recommending enforcement action where appropriate.
- Review and appraise the Borough's Conservation Areas.
- Generally promote the interests of the historic built environment with the Borough.
