Description
Frieze Hill Community Orchard is an area of former allotments and agricultural land now reverted to rough grassland dominated by more robust grasses such as Yorkshire fog and perennial rye grass. Shorter areas of grass contain white clover, soft brown, creeping thistle and broad-leaved dock.
The northern boundary is formed by a fence along the main railway line, partly covered in bramble. The southern boundary contains the remains of the former Grand Western Canal with a steep south-facing bank and dry ditch. A hedgerow along the ditch contains hawthorn, white willow, elder, elm and several large oak and field maple, and one large ash .Speckled wood butterflies occur along the southern hedge and whitethroat nest in the brambles adjacent to the railway.
An overgrown ditch forms the western boundary, whilst the eastern boundary consists of a newly planted hedge adjacent to the allotments.
The Community Orchard Group planted traditional Somerset fruit trees on the site in early 2004. Apple varieties include Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill.
