Decent Homes

The Government has set a target to ensure all social housing meets, or exceeds, a set standard of decency by 2010.

To meet the Decent Homes Standard a home must:

  • Meet the current minimum standard for housing
  • Be in a reasonable state of repair
  • Have reasonably modern services and facilities
  • It should not lack three or more of the following:
    • A reasonably modern kitchen (20 years or less)
    • A kitchen with adequate space and layout
    • A reasonably modern bathroom (30 years or less)
    • An appropriately located bathroom and WC
    • Adequate noise insulation
    • Adequate size and layout of common entrances for flats
  • Provides a reasonable degree of warmth

Local Authorities have to demonstrate how they are going to ensure that all their properties meet the Decent Homes Standard by 2010 by submitting a Housing Stock Options Appraisal to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister by July 2005.
