Light and Heavy Duty Crossings - Standard Construction Details


Private (Light Vehicles Not Exceeding 2 Tonne)

Alternative forms of construction:-

A - Wearing Course - 6mm thickness of fine cold asphalt to BS 4987 tables 53-56 or 12mm of 6mm nominal size wearing course to BS 4987 Tables 37-40

Base Course - 45mm thickness of 20mm nominal size dense bituminous macadam to BS 4987 Tables 25-28

*Base 150mm of 19mm granular base to CL 803 of D.O.T. specification

B - 125mm of concrete (min. strength 29 N/mm2) on 75mm of granular sub-base
Slab footway crossings are not approved


Commercial (Vehicles of 2 Tonne and over)

Alternative forms of construction:-

A - Wearing Course - 28mm of 10mm nominal size dense bitmac to BS 4987 Tables 45-48

Base Course - 60mm of 38mm nominal size dense bitmac to BS 4987 Tables 17-20

*Base - 225mm of graded granular road base to clause 803 of D.O.T. specification or:

B - 175mm of concrete (min. strength 29N/mm2) with mesh reinforcement BS Ref A98 30mm top of slab on 75mm of granular sub-base BS 4987.

 

*Notes: Where a vibrating roller with only a single roller (nominally rated at 0.4 tonnes) is used settlement will occur unless layers are restricted to 125mm thickness and receive at least 16 passes.

*If soft ground is encountered or other base material is used the base thickness should be increased by at least one 100mm layer and the Engineer notified.
