Hardstanding Specification
1.
Lowering of kerbs and the construction of the pavement crossing is to be carried
out by either the Technical Services Division of the Taunton Deane Borough Council
in which case an estimated cost of constructing the pavement crossing will be
given by the Technical Services Division, or by a Contractor whose standard
of workmanship is known to the Technical Services Officer as satisfactory, or
of whom satisfactory references are received.

The hardstanding is to be constructed as follows:-
125
mm (5") of concrete consisting of 1 part ordinary Portland cement, 2 parts
sharp sand and 4 parts of gap graded aggregate giving a minimum crushing strength
of 21 N/mm(2) on 100 mm consolidated hardcore (being well graded broken brick
or stone, with 50 mm scalpings or 50 mm granular base).

The vehicular pavement crossing is to be constructed using bituminous material
as follows:-

- 20 mm thickness of fine cold asphalt to BS 4987 clause 2.3.7 tables 53 - 56
or 20 mm of 6 mm nominal size dense macadam (s.w.c.5)
Base
Course
- 40 mm thickness of 20 mm nominal size dense bituminous macadam to BS 497 clause
2.2.6. tables 25-28
Sub-Base
- 150 mm thickness of type 1 Granular sub base to clause 803 of DTP Specification
Note:
Slab footway crossing cannot be approved
Where
the crossing passes through a grass verge 50 x 150 mm precast concrete, edging
kerbs are to be provided, bedded and backed with concrete.

Where the hardstanding abuts a wall of the dwelling the level of the hardstanding
shall be a minimum of 150 mm below the damp proof course level of the dwelling,
and the hardstanding shall be laid with a fall away from the dwelling to ensure
that surface water does not stand against the wall.

Building Regulation approval and Planning Permission may be required. The applicants
should, therefore contact the Technical Services Officer and the Borough Planning
Officer, The Deane House, Belvedere Road, Taunton telephone (01823) 356356 to
satisfy themselves whether Building Regulation or Planning Permission is required.
6.
Vehicular crossing are controlled by the County Divisional Surveyor (Highways),
Somerset County Council, County Hall, Taunton. Applicants living outside of
the excepted area should, therefore, gain the County Divisional Surveyors approval
before commencing the vehicular crossing.
