Aids and Adaptations
Aids and Adaptations apply to Council tenants who are disabled,
and require adaptations to facilitate access for them into and around their
home.
Aid and Adaptations work can include:-
- Hand/Grab Rails
- Stair Rails
- Ramps and Hardstandings
- Second Hand Stairlifts
- Showers over Baths
Local Housing Authorities are required to consult the appropriate
Welfare Authority (Social Services Occupational Therapist, Halcon Resource Centre,
Huish Close, Hamilton Road, Taunton, TA1 2EP, Tel: (01823) 338781. The Occupational
Therapist will visit and assess the work required, and the priority and send
in a referral to the Local Authority.
The Local Authority must also be satisfied that it is "reasonable
and practical" to carry out the relevant works, and works will be considered
subject to priority, and budget availability.
If the adaptations required to the property are extensive, the
Occupational Therapist may suggest that you apply for a Disabled Facilities
Grant. The Disabled Facilities Grants are means tested, and the applicant will
be required to fill in a form to assess their income and whether there is a
contribution to be made. A separate Advice Sheet is available on Disabled Facilities
Grants.
