Waste Services
Household Waste and Recycling in Somerset
In October 2007, Somerset became the first countywide area to combine waste service functions under a single joint committee of Councillors from all Somerset local authorities.
The Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) will manage waste collection, recycling and disposal services for all 228,000 Somerset homes, aiming to increase recycling levels to 50 per cent and beyond and to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Previously, the District and Borough Councils collected household waste, whilst Somerset County Council managed the waste disposal and the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Moving to the new Somerset Waste Partnership is a big step towards improving and harmonising recycling and waste services across Somerset, helping to remove confusion over what services are provided where, not to mention making significant efficiency savings through working as a partnership.
What will it mean to me?
For members of the public there will be no change to the service that they currently receive. The only difference will be the designs on the sides of the lorries collecting the recycling, refuse and garden waste.
Frequently asked questions
Will there be any changes?
No, the services will carry on as normal, same times and days.
What about plastic and cardboard?
Thanks to the savings made through the creation of Somerset Waste Partnership, trials to add plastic bottles and cardboard are being worked on. Further information will be available shortly; however, it is intended to run large-scale trials in the New Year.
Why run the trials?
The SWP needs to work out the best way to add plastic bottles and cardboard to the kerbside. There are many options, and the trials will work out the best of these methods, and allow them to weight up whether it is financially viable to introduce these new materials.
