Mayor of Taunton Deane

About the Mayor - Councillor Hazel Prior-Sankey

Hazel has lived in Taunton since birth. She was educated at Bishop Fox’s Girls Grammar School and Somerset College of Arts and Technology. She is married to Adrian and they have three adult children with nine grandchildren and counting.

Hazel has had a long political career commencing with service on Creech St Michael Parish Council in the late 1980‘s. She was elected to Somerset County Council in 1993 and to Taunton Deane Borough Council in 2003.

Hazel was Mayoress in 2002/3 when Adrian was Mayor. They have lived in Holway for 22 years. Hazel devotes her time to her duties as a local councillor and to her family. Her hobbies include cooking, reading and walking during visits to the Isles of Scilly, her favourite holiday destination.

As a councillor Hazel tries to help those she represents.

“Most issues are comparatively minor but nonetheless important to those who raise them and are often solved swiftly. Sometimes councillors can make a real, even life-changing, difference, and it is those instances that keep me motivated.“ explained Hazel.

As a committed Christian Hazel understands the value of listening and taking time to comfort and help people whatever their faith or beliefs.

Hazel concluded,

‘It is an honour to be chosen to become the Mayor of Taunton Deane. I hope to fulfil the role with diligence and grace and I am pleased that Adrian will support me as my consort during the busy year.”
